Universal Soldiers
Universal Soldiers Server

The official US Server will get it's phat pipe on the 25th of January.  It will be run out of HUGEJOHNSONS home.  Until that server is operational RANDOCOMMANDO is running a US Backup Server from his home.  Below is all the info you need to log on to it.  RANDOCOMMANDO also wrote me an in-depth email about some of the server issues and bottlenecks.  Below is that email in it's entirety.

NEW UPDATE FROM RANDOCOMMANDO

US BACKUP SERVER:

IP ADDRESS:  63.226.215.78:27960

Email to Lanfear from RANDOCOMMANDO (14 Jan 2001):

I had some line problems with qwest. (happens too frequently, so I submitted a service request, not holding my breath though)
router rebooted 8 times, each with a new IP.  finally after 3 diff subnets I am active.  I don't know if my line quality will affect max clients but its still a little low.  (should be greater than 18 and ideally above 30, mine is 22~23)  None the less I have re written my NAT to accommodate this and have figured out a lot of the server bugs, to include, I think/hope (initial tests suggest) the download issue.  I originally set up the server out of my playing wfa folder.  Bad juju.  It has all the map packs I downloaded to play freelance and so forth.  plus the latest ogl packs.  I think most non-clan players have only the default installs of q3/wfa and therefore were getting a push initialized (server intervened) and retuned them to the connecting screen which starts the download again, you've all been there before, so you get the picture.  my reconnect number is set to three so they get kicked then.  Course bandwidth then returns to normal.  I am going to look and see if I can set client download rates to zero to avoid this (as long as we let JohnQ public in) as well as have installed wfa to a clean (known as clanplay\wfa locally on the server hard drive)with no add-on.  I originally used a configurator from the web that writes so-so configs.  I got a better one last night and re-wrote a config then tested and tweaked at it a bit as far as max rates the clients can get data, min and max frame rates, how high their ping can be (or they cannot connect, right now I have it at 700 it used to be default >999, added 2 private clients, set up ref passwords.  I will lower this once we get the big fat pipe-o-bandwidth on the 25 or sooner if we feel fit.  The purpose of my running this from my house instead of Gene's is to iron out configs and provide a back up/practice server for we )US( people.  I un-password protected it and it got slammed =)  Which is a good thing.  BTW I also used 3 separate programs and came back with equivalent to 33-50% of a T1.  512d/272u is my minimum leased line rates.  Which is a good thing (at least for me =).

The server address is 63.226.215.78 :27960
ref pass is "****"
rcon pass is "******"

My settings for informational use for any/everyone. Andreas/Gene, you may want to make note, in case I win the lottery and move to Tahiti.

SERVER CONFIG
I have set classlimits (and ref pass) in an ini file , they could be set for each map.  We may want to do this to limit snipers to 2 on some maps.  Sorry Dr.Sniper, it was suggested to me and I though it might make sense.  for now they are default.

myserver.ini file has 16 empty map slots hence the map config in the server config.

Email to RANDOCOMMANDO from Lanfear (14 Jan 2001)

As far as the server goes, I think it is more important to just get the server up and somewhat stable.  The port issue is just a temporary inconvenience not really a problem, like you said we can post it on the website.  Terminal services to the physical server is not that important at this point.  Even /rcon is a luxury at this point.  /ref access would be nice but not a necessity by a long shot.  As long as the map rotations are stable.  Also if the router reboots I think it takes about 12 hours or so before the master server picks it up....unless you are on a static line, naturally.
You have really done a great job in getting the clan a long way towards having a home away from home (pun intended).

Beautiful site man, really.  I also have configured my nat route to be somewhat dynamic and am testing it now.  That means I have to "massage" my router (Cisco 675, I just don't have real clean lines, because I am 13000+ feet away from the Telco's local CO). But if the router reboots the server will still be re-pinging(heartbeat)the master servers and my entry should pick up the new ip in the range.  its something like this:  IP NAT Entry = 10.0.0.6, 27960, *, 27960, 63.226;
allowing me to push out the server and let player join even if my outside ip changes.  We shall see if my smoke and mirrors will continue to work.

Well I was away getting results and game spy will pick it up, but from the Q3wfa menu is was not there.  That was a porting thing.  my server was on 27960 and it hit the router at 10.0.0.1 (internal) on port 10001 which hit my nat and went out on 27960 or so I thought.  Game spy registered it as the 10001 port and I have yet to see it on the menu for wfa.  I have made and additional entry to follow as a secondary.  I'll let you know.

If we continue to have addressing issues and people really need to know its port number (only those who specify or mark it as favorite will suffer this "dynamic" issue) we can post changes on the site.  I will have to update you.  Its not an issue since I can get into my router from the outside world and take care of it.  we have rcon for the wfa server but terminal services to the actual server (win2k) will be dicey.   If I start work early this week I wont be able to have this server up 24/7 reliably.
